PROJECT R32

PROJECT R32 - DYNO - BRAKES - TRACKING - OIL GAUGE - BOOT LEAK - WHEELS - TOP ARM BUSHES

Techie info on the R32 GTS-t RB20DET from various sources, but mainly from the excellent SDU (Skylines DownUnder) website and more particularly these SDU member's websites Meggala and Forsteen, to name but a few, plus much useful info gleaned from the various SDU Forums, thanks all....

Weight  1320 Kg (2910 Lbs)
Power     214 bhp @ 6400
Torque  194 ft/lb @ 3200

Oil pressures warm (Note. Nissan's sender unreliable)
revs      Kg/cm.sq       PSI
800 -         1               14
2000 -       3              43
6000 -       4              57

Compression Ratio 8.5:1
Compressions 140 PSI (approx)

Well had the car a few weeks now (bought 02/04/02, details here) and have carried out the following...
Removed all the aircon kit, as it was 'shot' :-( , should save around 20kg though :-)
Checked compressions, got 120 to 130 psi, a wee bit low (maybe low crank speed on the 120's ?) but OKish for the age
Checked plugs OKish,
NGK PFR5A-11, regapped from 1mm+ to 0.8mm, that mostly cured minor misfire felt on boost
New fuel filter, NPNo. (Nissan Part No.) 16400-53J10 (£11.75), doubt it's ever been changed !!
Ran diagnostic on ECU, got code 55 so all OK, reset ECU to defaults (will self learn again)
Checked brake pads, just about OK, calipers look like those on my old 200SX so pads should be easy to get
Changed cambelt NPNo. 13028-20P10 and generator belt NPNo. 11720-24U00, tension and idle pulleys 'iffy', so replaced with new (secondhand) one's, all expertly done by Gary at GTaRt and at a very reasonable cost too !!, much quieter now (added GTaRt sticker to cambelt cover :-)

Gary's a well respected Skyline tuner, one of many credits includes StuMc's R33 GTS which has been TJ dynoed at very healthy :-) 342.5bhp/326lbf-ft, see details here, his own car a R33 GTR made a awesome 714bhp/478lbf-ft, at a recent TJ dyno day

Replaced cam breather link hose, as perished (£2.50)
Sprayed spark plug cover, as well scratched, now a nice dark Blue :-) (Hammerrite £3.50)
Checked/tighten all turbo hoses
Cleaned air flow meter, with brake cleaner (spray can £4)
Although the car had a 'service' a month prior, will change the oil every 500mls for the next 1500mls, to clean out the engine, then put in some good oil, yet to be decided, oil filter NPNo. A5208-H8904 (£6.11) sump washer NPNo. 11026-01M02 (£1.30)
Investigated oil pressure fluctuation, hopefully just a sender problem, may fit a mechanical gauge to monitor it (click here to see progress)
Need better brakes (click here to see progress)
Changed gearbox oil 2.3Lt Castrol Syntrax (£8.50/Lt)
Changed diff oil 1.5Lt Motul 300 (£12.00/Lt)

Time to have the car on the dyno, me thinks, by that nice Tim fella at Tuning Japanese  (very interesting results Click here)

Still to do...

Replace offside steering boot, as split, Mr Duct Tape to the temporary rescue, yet again :-) (note. evidently the repair would pass a UK MOT, as no 'visible' split in the boot is apparent), Steering boot, temporary repair....

Investigate slight suspension knock, seems to be the upper suspension arms pins/bushes (same prob as my old Primera), may be able to rebush (note. well within MOT 'limits')

Also, during the recent 'service', by the last owner, the speedo worm drive in the gearbox got broken (how ???), anyways his garage have said they will replace it, but it's been more than 5 weeks, so I'm not holding my breath, Middlehurst quoted me £32.79 and 2 week delivery so I may have to do it myself, only a 5 min job though... Because of the aforegoing I have no HICAS and as the PAS is speed sensitive, it needs doing soon, in the meantime I've calculated approx speed in relation to revs/gears/tyre size (update 27/04/02 - have accurate speed, in relation to revs, from dyno now), so should not fall foul of Mr Plod (hopefully :-)...

Update 30/06/02 - Part final came though NPNo. 32702-58S21 (via Abbey Motorsport), now fitted (note.. best to jackup the rear or you'll lose some gearbox oil, as I found out), this was the old one !....

Update 01/05/02 - Car went in for a tracking check, click here for pics and  printout's, which maybe useful info for other owners....

10/08/02 - Water leak, in the boot.. click here for info
